From dream to reality

Cristian was interviewed by interior stylists The Longest Stay at the launch of the BD Barcelona showroom in London during Clerkenwell Design Week

Over the course of 15 minutes, he talked about his positive obsessive character, turning his dreams into objects and about the pixel as the atomic structure of an image. He discussed his design process, the marriage of the digital and the analogue, and collaborating with people who value eclecticism in order to create a narrative, like the inspiring team behind BD Barcelona.

Open Doors and Canapes

Earlier this month, we organised our first ever Open Door events as part of Barcelona Design Week.

The events were an opportunity for us to create a narrative, to welcome Barcelonians into our colourful, pixelated world. We showed a wide range of products, from our new furniture collection, to art works by Cristian Zuzunaga as well as our ever-expanding selection of home and fashion accessories.

We also designed a Zuzu tapa for the occasion. Inspired by the Spanish cuisine of our roots, our Zuzu tapa gave our guests a full sensorial experience of the Zuzunaga world, with bold colours and pixelated shapes.

Thanks to everyone for coming! Our goal has always been to create a community of like-minded individuals. It was great to meet so many of you and take this community into the analogue world.

New home towels 2015

Cotton routes

Zuzunaga is expanding its product range to explore new household needs: in addition to blankets, cushions and poufs, the studio now offers Route bath towels.

Designed by Cristian Zuzunaga, the colour scheme of the towels combines a black base with bright colours to achieve an effect that is both vibrant and calming. Their pattern is inspired by shapes reminiscent of paths, roads and, more specifically, urban routes (hence the name Route). They are also a tribute to English painter Bridget Riley, one of the main proponents of Optical Art. If you look at the towel from a distance, you will perceive naturally occurring optical illusions, which produce sensations of movement.

Made in Portugal from 100% cotton, the towels feature a double-sided terry finish for optimum absorbency. They are also available in four colours (light grey, pink, orange and dark blue) and five sizes (30cm x 30cm, 33cm x 50cm, 50cm x 100 cm, 70cm x 140cm and 100cm x 150cm) to suit a variety of needs. You can purchase the towels from our online shop in packs of 10 towels or single towels (only in sizes 70cm x 140cm and 100cm x 150cm).

Colour and space give shape to these towels, which challenge your senses, bringing Zuzunaga to new corners of your home.

Bitmap collection

These towels are part of the Bitmap collection that includes blankets & throws, espadrilles and iPad & MacBook cases. A bitmap is a type of image file format that compresses the elements of digital images for storage. The name is also a play on words: If you were to zoom out hundreds of times, you would find a picture of an urban landscape. A bitmap thus acts not only as a map of a digital image, but also as a map of a real, physical place.

New beach towels 2015

Embrace the waves!

Zuzunaga is expanding its product range with Waves beach towels, thus covering new seasons (spring and summer) and completing a cycle that has taken the studio from the inside out, from the home to the outdoors.

Designed by Cristian Zuzunaga, these towels come in one size (100cm x 180cm), and the design features in most cases a black base combined with bright colours to achieve an effect that is both vibrant and calming. Chromatically, there are two different lines: one dominated by a single colour (pink, orange or dark blue) and another multicolour line with towels of up to seven colours (Multicolour Waves and Mini White Waves). Their pattern is inspired by shapes that are reminiscent of sea waves.

The designs are also a tribute to English painter Bridget Riley, one of the main proponents of Optical Art. If you look at the towel from a distance, you will perceive naturally occurring optical illusions, which produce sensations of movement.

Made in Portugal from 100% cotton, they have a dual finish (velour on one side and terry on the other) in order to achieve maximum softness and absorbency.

Colour and space give shape to these towels, which challenge your senses, so that you can enjoy Zuzunaga no matter where you are

New Brintons Collaboration 2013

New carpet collection available for purchase

Zuzunaga is delighted to announce a new collaboration with Brintons, the Kidderminster-based carpet maunfacturers.

After a successful collaboration on the Infinity Runner at Campaign for Wool’s WOOL HOUSE in March 2013, we have been commissioned by Brintons to create a series of luxury wool runners and home carpets – available to buy for the first time.

The new collection is inspired by Cristian Zuzunaga’s visit to the Brintons’ textile archive, where he found astonishing similarities to his own pixellated designs. His imagination was captured by 17th and 18th century fabrics woven on grid patterns, often using extremely bright colours.

Inspired by these antique fabrics, Cristian Zuzunaga’ designs engage with the mandala and repeating symmetry as motifs from which to build new patterns. Long repeat patterns add modern shades and subtleties to the minute, repeating basic shapes, creating an alluringly complex impression.

The collaboration comes at an apt moment for both Brintons and Zuzunaga. After centuries as a leading manufacturer of traditional carpets, Brintons is staking its claim as one of the most innovative contemporary producers of woollencarpets. Brintons is one of the few factories with the technology to realise Zuzunaga’s design.

You can purchase the new carpets here: https://www.rugs-by-brintons.co.uk/collections/zuzunaga/

SO SOTTSASS @Darkroom 2013

Bitmap blankets launch at exclusive London design boutique.

Zuzunaga’s colourful Bitmap blankets are being presented as part of Darkoom’s SO SOTTSASS A/W ’13 season. Darkroom is a celebrated design accessories store based in central London.

The season, curated to coincide with London Design Festival, was opened on September 16th with a launch party in the Darkroom shop itself. Inspired by visionary post-modern Italian designer Ettore Sottsass, the collection brings together interior items that all bring eye-popping, defiant colour and shape to bear on household design.

Visionary and contrary, throughout his life Sottsass worked across many disciplines, and his influence can be found everywhere from high fashion to office furniture in the second half of the 20th century. From the iconic Valentine typewriter for Olivetti, to the subversively kitschy furniture of the Memphis group, Sottsass enlivened the functionality of ordinary objects, while pushing the boundaries of current tastes and creating new paradigms for future design.

The store design is described by Darkroom as ‘gloriously garish’, with witty, attractive designs whose materials ‘push the boundaries between furniture and fashion’. Zuzunaga is displaying its well-known Bitmap city blankets in all colourways – Tokyo, Barcelona, Shanghai and latest addition New York. We are also showcasing our dazzling new additions Labyrinth, which are made from cotton and nylon in bright candy and contrasting bold shades.

You can see our designs, and buy them online or at the location itself, at Darkroom’s beautiful store, located on Lamb’s Conduit Street in central London. It is with great pride that we say Darkroom is one of London’s most stylish and revered design boutiques and we are delighted to be kicking off our London Design Festival as part of their selection.

Zuzunaga launches its own stall at LDF Wednesday 18th September as part of designjunction, in The Sorting Office, New Oxford Street in Holborn.

Adobe Design Achievement team interviewed Cristian Zuzunaga 2014

The Adobe Design Achievement Awards team is always happy to hear from ADAA alumni.

We enjoy hearing about their evolving work, creative experiments, and recent accomplishments. We never tire of sharing and applauding the innovative projects that come from our global community of ADAA alumni. This was true when Cristian Zuzunaga let us know he’d be in San Francisco in June, to speak at the @Arkitektura showroom during SF Design Week.

We first met Cristian in 2007, when he was attending the Royal College of Art in London. His group entry was chosen as an ADAA finalist selection, in the category of illustration. The ADAA judges recognized his work for its richness in color, silhouette, and creative concept. Cristian’s ADAA entry was a collection of men’s wear, using textiles inspired by pixelated coloration. The illustrations and final silhouettes demonstrated surprising examples of coloration, motif, and modern graphics.

It was great catching up with Cristian at the Adobe offices in San Francisco. He shared his insights for staying inspired. “I stay connected to my surroundings, to nature, and balance the stimuli of the city. My commute from the country allows for a quiet time to process and reflect on new designs or unexpected approaches.

We asked Cristian what advice he may have for recent graduates. Zuzanaga then told of the times when he was a recent graduate, and rejected for employment as a designer. “I went to many job interviews. I was rejected three or four times. By my fourth interview rejection, I told myself, ‘well if no-one else can see the potential that I see, then I must have something pretty different here.’ So I made a conscious choice to believe in myself and my work, and not get discouraged.”

Cristian Zuzunaga’s design house was founded in 2007, offering contemporary textile prints, rugs, furniture, and art pieces. Since then, Cristian has received numerous awards and worldwide recognition for his conceptual prints and product designs. Zuzunaga received the ICFF Award, for Best Textiles in New York, as well as the coveted Les Découvertes Award at Maison & Objet, in Paris. He also received the esteemed Elle Deco International Design Award for Best Fabric Design in 2011, in response to his Skyline curtain collection by Kvadrat.

To view the full range of Cristian Zuzunaga’s work, please visit his website. Join us, in wishing Cristian the very best in his future creative endeavors. We continue to support and celebrate the extended ADAA global community and alumni! Explore Cristian’s ADAA submission, featured here, on the Adobe Design Achievement Awards Online Gallery.

Introducing: CUZCO poufs 2014

Zuzunaga's latest product is a series of interlocking upholstered poufs inspired by a modern wonder

Let us be the first to introduce you all to CUZCO.

CUZCO is a series of four distinctly-shaped, interlocking poufs inspired by the famous Saksaywaman dry stone wall on the outskirts of Cuzco, Peru. The wall has been made centuries ago, presumably by Incas. With no cement, each stone is cut perfectly into size, fitting together in a way that today’s technology wouldn’t be able to replicate.

The poufs, inspired by these stones, take on geometric forms; some take 90-degree angles, allowing them to be tables, corner tables, chairs. They have only one position were they form a figure when attached but when “broken” into 4 units they can be mixed to form endless combinations.

There are 3 options for upholstering CUZCO:
a) In wool, using Kvadrat’s classic best seller Divina fabric, available in 4 colours: green, yellow, blue & red.
b) Lateral panels in Trevira CS, in a custom-made design by Cristian Zuzunaga based on a Bitmap of a city.
c) For hotels and interior designers, the poufs will also be available in its raw structure to be custom upholstered by clients

These poufs are part of Zuzunaga ‘Re-architecture’ project: a mission to reimagine untouchable elements of our environments (like pixels, images) as tactile, material things to be played with and lived upon.

Let’s re-architecture!

Zuzunaga at Milan Design Week 2014

Launching RE-ARCHITECTURE: a new vision for pixellated design

Zuzunaga will launch a spectacular stand for display at Ventura Lambrate as part of Milan Design Week 2014.

Running from April 8th – 13th, Zuzunaga will be exhibiting as part of Fuorisalone in Milan, at Ventura XV.

The installation, entitled ‘Re-architecture’ is a first for the company. Instead of presenting individual product collections, Zuzunaga takes a bold step and presents an entire design philosophy – a world of pixels and bold primary colours – which seamlessly blend furniture, fashion and lifestyle.

‘Re-architecture’ is our call to arms, “our answer to supermodernity and its challenges”, founder Cristian Zuzunaga explains. “It’s about taking what is around, the key materials in your life – for us, the pixel, a contemporary icon – and re-imagining, re-shaping them, manipulating them to suit your needs and feelings.”

The exhibition will include the launch of several new items, including Cuzco, our range of interlocking poufs: geometrically-shaped pixels made larger than life in red, yellow, blue and green. There are also sleek iPad and Macbook covers, zipfree and easy-on, which celebrate and protect the Apple technology which has made our work, and the work of so many others, possible.

We’d love to see you there. Please come and join in the fun at Ventura VX, Via Ventura 15, 20134 Milano, Italy.

Zuzunaga returns to Paris trade show

Zuzunaga is heading to Paris this September to participate in Maison et Objet, a significant date on the international design calendar.

The Maison et Objet Zuzunaga relationship is a strong one. We have been visiting this prestigious trade show since 2009. Running from 6th-10th September at Paris Nord Villepinte, you’ll be able to find us in Hall 7, at stall D69, where we will be housing a stand for the entire duration of the trade show.

Maison et Objet is the first of three extremely exciting trade shows that we’ll be visiting in September. We’ll also be launching several new products in Paris – as well as new additions to our Integrate: Time and Space collection, there will also be new designs from the Bitmap portfolio, including new fabric combinations and colours.

Come by and say hello!

Nomads at Boisbuchet 2013

Zuzunaga and Teixidors run Vitra workshop

This June 2013, Zuzunaga led a design workshop at the prestigious Domaine de Boisbuchet estate.
Invited by design giants Vitra, who are overseers of the Boisbuchet estate, Zuzunaga and their collaborators Teixidors, with whom we make the Integrate: Time and Space collection, were invited to present a week-long intensive workshop for professionals and creatives interested in contemporary design.
This Zuzunaga Vitra workshop, taking place from 23rd to 29th June, is entitled Nomads. Nomads takes the loom as its starting point and encourages the participants to explore weaving in its most primal forms. Cristian, along with a team (and a wooden loom) from Teixidors, led the week’s exploration of how woven material can create and reflect personal or shared history.
Flowers, long grasses, hair – the natural environment immediately gave the inspiration to create textiles and woven patterns which integrated and reflected the unique time and space shared during the week at Boisbuchet. You can see more videos and photos from the event on our Zuzunaga Facebook page.

Zuzunaga at Capsule 2013

Zuzunaga returns to men's fashion in Paris

This June 2013, Zuzunaga made its debut in the men’s fashion showcase Capsule, held in Paris from 28-30 June.

Represented by The Clop, international fashion and art agents, Zuzunaga travelled to the Capsule showrooms near Gare d’Austerlitz for the trade show. Displaying a key menswear accessories collection – including scarves and our Citywalker espadrilles, as well as cardigans and blankets – the event has laid the foundations for a return to fashion for the brand.

Keep an eye out for more new additions in the future to the Zuzunaga menswear portfolio!
