Our Method

Each design starts from a photograph taken by Cristian Zuzunaga. He literally zooms into images in search of their pure essence, their unique internal structures that make it possible for an individual image to exist.

During this process he finds unexpected colourful combinations and structures that create amazing visual patterns and shapes. Digital images are made of invisible squares: pixels. When abstracted and isolated, these objective geometric shapes become alive and, once we apply the designs to products, using different materials, printing and manufacturing techniques they become real. Suddenly the invisible becomes visible, the objective becomes subjective, thus transcending the planes of existence.

Our Collections

Each Zuzunaga collection explores one theme or idea. At present we have three ongoing major collections: Pixel, Bitmap and Integrate: Time and Space.

Our collections are inspired by both architecture and the urban environment, by Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, anthropology, sociology and the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. Each Zuzunaga collection explores one theme or idea. At present we have three ongoing major collections: Pixel, Bitmap and Integrate: Time and Space. Each collection contains a series of sub-collections that explore the theme from various viewpoints. For example, the Pixel collection includes the Digit and Squaring of the Circle sub-collections. New Zuzunaga collections will be added to progressively reflect an ongoing personal and natural process of evolution.

Zuzunaga explores the use of colour as a means to evoke emotions and counterbalance negative ways of seeing and thinking; as an agent to reinforce identity and foster interaction between individuals and their surroundings. The brand uses—and encourages others to use—colour in a personal, cheeky and brave manner. At the same time, utmost attention and care are given to the production process in order to achieve bright, accurate and vibrant colours.

Pixel philosophy

We believe the pixel is the icon of our times, and we explore the ways in which this shape —the square— connects us and brings us together.

We believe the pixel is the icon of our times, and we explore the ways in which this shape —the square— connects us and brings us together. The pixel is our inspiration, and we play with how it can be used to convey meaning and emotion. Though the square is often used in futuristic designs, the shape is archetypal, as old as it is fundamental. We work to combine this modern-day icon with ancient ideas of being.

Our exclusive, contemporary design

We develop exclusive designs, so that those who use them feel unique.

We develop exclusive designs, so that those who use them feel unique. Our creations not only bear the signature of their designer, Cristian Zuzunaga, but, technology permitting, we also prioritize the development of one-of-a- kind pieces. One main example is our line of pixel cushions, the cloth of which is cut to ensure that each cushion is different. We see ourselves as contemporary, because we design in accordance with, and for, our surroundings by combining the traditional with the modern, the analogue with the digital.

Top quality raw materials

We use top-of-the-line fabrics and natural fibres (superfine merino wool, Egyptian and Peruvian cottons and finest silks) to make our products as warm and sensual as possible.

We use top-of-the-line fabrics and natural fibres (superfine merino wool, Egyptian and Peruvian cottons and finest silks) to make our products as warm and sensual as possible. Within our possibilities, we trace the raw materials we purchase to ensure the highest quality in our products, such as with our French and Spanish ecological merino wool.

Our commitment to handmade craft

We believe in quality over quantity, valuing handmade products over mass production.

We believe in quality over quantity, valuing handmade products over mass production. Examples of this work include our blankets hand-woven at Teixidors or our espadrilles sewn by hand in La Rioja. This approach is also a way for us to keep connected with our roots and tradition and is a key factor in differentiating the final look and feel of our products.

Made in Europe

We produce in Europe as a matter of principle: we believe in its tradition of design, in its standards of quality

We produce in Europe as a matter of principle: we believe in its tradition of design, in its standards of quality and in its ability to promote an equitable relationship between producers and consumers. For us, this is also the best way to know whom we are working with—to get to know the people behind the looms and machines. We only produce outside Europe if there is a particular technique or project where it would not make sense to carry out production or development on the continent.

We practice sustainability

Our suppliers and manufacturers must promote sustainable long-term growth, both in their own companies and in their local communities.

Our suppliers and manufacturers must promote sustainable long-term growth, both in their own companies and in their local communities. One example is El Taller del Llibre, a cooperative based in Terrassa, near Barcelona, whose principles include responsible consumption and the inclusion of individuals at risk of social exclusion. The cooperative produces our Individuate booklet collection, made from the leftover scraps of wool used in making our hand-woven blankets, which are made by Teixidors, another exemplary cooperative.

Spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange

From East to West, we have a global vision and promote continuous cultural exchange through our projects and among our partners.

Zuzunaga not only designs its own products but also collaborates with leading art and design firms and institutions, such as Tate Gallery, BD Barcelona Design, Kvadrat and Nanimarquina, among others. We work out of London and Barcelona and maintain close relationships with partners from cities throughout the world (Paris, Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Milan). From East to West, we have a global vision and promote continuous cultural exchange through our projects and among our partners.

Philosophy and humanity

We place the human experience at the heart of our products, creating simple, useful, vibrant objects that elicit an emotional and sensual response.

We place the human experience at the heart of our products, creating simple, useful, vibrant objects that elicit an emotional and sensual response. We are inspired by Eastern and Western philosophy, by humanism and naturalism and by the desire to escape the lack of meaning so often inherent in modern life. We think about people not only when we design, but also when we relate to our surrounding environment, giving priority to intangible values like intuition and humanity.
